MMS

MMS is a metal-enclosed, double busbar, air-insulated switchgear system with vacuum interrupters and can be used in applications up to 24 kV. Using modular circuit breaker and bus-coupler panels ensures maximum flexibility, while the double busbar installation provides continuous electrical energy supply. This makes MMS an ideal energy distribution application via main stations in heavy industry, where uptime and uninterrupted power supply are critical.

Minimum maintenance needed

The expected lifetime of switchgear is between 30 and 40 years depending on the environment and the operation of the plant. Thereby, the maintenance costs represent an important factor in the calculation of the overall costs of the switchgear.

MMS excels here with its "fit and forget" approach, which means that all primary parts are maintenance-free for life. Likewise, the disconnector and circuit-breaker mechanisms do not need maintenance for the first decade. Since the mechanisms are easily accessible through the secondary compartment, the required maintenance time and costs are reduced to a minimum.

Double busbar - the most economical solution

An MMS double busbar installation offers more than just optimal availability. Compared with single busbar and duplex medium voltage switchgear systems, it is also the best investment choice:

  • In terms of initial costs alone, a double busbar installation is significantly more cost-effective than two single busbar installations.
  • The installation costs of an MMS are also lower than those of a duplex installation because it is easer to assemble and the primary cables only need to be connected once. In addition, the relatively expensive busbar connection from one installation to the other needed in a duplex installation is redundant with an MMS system.
  • MMS is based on experience and knowledge gained over many years in the areas of cast resin technology, vacuum technology and electrical field control. Its compact design makes MMS highly flexible and economically attractive when existing installations are being replaced.
  • MMS offers operational cost advantages, because it can be automated and operated remotely. Several substations can be operated from the central control room which leads to savings in travel costs, time and ensures a higher level of availability.
  • Moreover, MMS is very easy to operate. The logically structured, user-friendly control panel and the developed user interface for mechanical emergency operation ensure maximum efficiency for the operator.
  • In addition, a double busbar installation normally has the same functionality as a duplex installation. However, an MMS installation takes up much less floor space, which can lead to savings on building costs.

SF₆-free switchgear is in our DNA

Eaton has been pioneering SF₆-free medium voltage switchgear systems for over 60 years. Aligned with Eaton's strong commitment to social responsibility, MMS has been designed as an environmentally friendly system. The use of air instead of SF₆-gas as an insulating medium, and vacuum as a switching medium reflects this approach. Thus, MMS can be completely recycled at the end of its life without any problem. Furthermore, Eaton's development and production processes are fully compliant with the rules and procedures of the ISO 14001 environmental certificate.

“Our customers highly value the reliability and safety of Eaton’s MMS medium voltage double busbar system. This is a high-end system offering full remote operation and control for the electrical grid. MMS maximizes power uptime by offering changeover between busbars without interruption and the unique feature of switchgear extension under live service condition.”

Easy integration into automated substations

An MMS system is easy to automate. This system is ideally suited to an automated environment and there is obviously a preference for international standards such as the open control and communication protocol in accordance with IEC 60870.

MMS can always be integrated into an existing automated environment as well. As an independent partner, Eaton will be pleased to advise you on any matter, whether it will be refurbishment or expansion of an existing sub-station. We will be happy to submit a tender for the entire project.

The MMS system can be read out and operated without any problems using SCADA systems. MMS also offers great flexibility with respect to protection relay manufacturers. The equipment you prefer can be integrated without any difficulty. The system is also suitable for both serial field bus systems and conventional wiring methods.
